St Maximilian Kolbe

St Maximilian Kolbe was a Franciscan friar who had a devotion to the Immaculate Conception. He was involved in publication of newspapers where he was vocally critical of the Nazis. He was taken to Auschwitz where he volunteered to replace a married man about to be executed. After weeks of torture Kolbe was finally killed by lethal injection.
